I haven't had the privilege of knowing Jaap for very long (although I do know a Jap who lives near my home in the same jungle as the Cheshire cat. He hasn't yet been told that WW2 is over because we get all our wicker baskets from him).

I was drawn to Jaap before I even knew that he was the well-travelled, entrepeneurial, well-read, socially adept, philosopher that he is. I was enthralled by his wicked and profound sense of humour which appeals to my wicked and shallow nature.

It strikes me that Jaap does not know everything but, because he is a supreme BSer, appears to know everything about anything worth knowing about. What's more, I would willingly believe everything he tells me simply because he tells me it's true. In conflicts with those who know him not, he has a godlike way of undermining their beliefs by simply destroying their faith in themselves and leaving them without the will to live.

Moreover, it seems that Jaap has lived in every country on Earth and some that are elsewhere. This is a major reason why he can colloquially communicate in almost every language in the known universe including Klingon. In other words, he can talk BS to anyone and leave them thinking they have just been gifted with a new passage from the Holy Book.

I also believe that Jaap often bats for the underdog, the under-privileged and the under-achiever because, in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king! Also, why else would he live in the Netherlands?

In summary, I haven't known Jaap for long but I wish I had known him longer. I know my life would have been richer for it. It also shows what a sad b**tard I am!
